It’s been over 10 years since Eli Pariser warned us (in his landmark book and uber popular Ted Talk) about how internet “filter bubbles” were changing the way we consume and think about information, the world and each other. Over a decade later, the algorithms that underpin how tech companies personalize our online experiences have also become highly effective drivers of mis-. dis-, and mal- information. In this session, we’ll explore ways to teach learners about how algorithms work along, while discovering strategies for disrupting their control over the information that shapes our opinions, identities and relationships (both on and off line).
