Integrating Literacy, STEM and SEL: Solving Today's Problems in a Meaningful Way

This session is designed with the intention to introduce participants with ideas, lessons, and resources to successfully integrate Literacy, STEM, and SEL into the classroom, library, or enhancement class. Participants will actively participate through partner or group discussions, online polls, and a Q & A session. Since I have taught STEM as a special/enhancement, used it in my classroom as a brain break, and used it as a Media Coordinator and ITF, I decided to take the picture books (all relatively new within the last 5 years) and tie SEL traits into it as well. For example, using the book, The Most Magnificent Thing, to read before students complete a STEM challenge to promote perseverance. Teachers will also learn about tech tools to help guide their students through each challenge. Using Flipgrid or Screencastify to record their reflections, using tech tools like Merge Cube, Sphero, Novel Effect, and Ozobots as part of the lessons will be discussed, and after the session, participants will have the opportunity to PLEARN (Play + Learn) with those tech tools.

  • Diversity I always use diverse picture books to include in each STEM lesson that also integrates an SEL trait. Those will be displayed and if I have tables, they will spread out on tables so participants can look through/read them. Inclusion involves everyone, so everyone will have an opportunity to engage in the session by using any device they have, discussions, and guided help if needed. I also share ways to differentiate when designing plans with STEM and SEL by assigning students roles or letting themselves assign roles to one another based on their strengths. Everyone is provided with what they need to be successful.
